A 64-year-old Iqaluit man has been arrested and charged in relation to several sexual assault investigations involving girls under the age of 16 years, the RCMP said in a news release issued Friday.
He is charged with six counts of sexual assault and six counts of sexual interference. Those incidents are alleged to have happened between November 2021 and February 2022.
On Feb. 26, Nunavut RCMP’s specialized investigation team executed a search warrant at the man’s residence, where he was arrested.
The man appeared before a judge on Mar. 4.
He was released from custody under several conditions including not having contact with any of the alleged victims, witnesses or anyone under the age 18, remaining in his residence from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., and not having anyone in his residence. He is also not allowed to leave Nunavut.
The RCMP’s investigators thanked community partners with the investigation “and with keeping these girls safe,” the RCMP media release stated.
But investigations are still ongoing and police said they believe there may be additional victims.
Additional victims are encouraged to come forward by contacting the RCMP at 979-0123.
