Nunavut man killed in New Year’s day incident

A young Nunavut man was killed early New Year’s day after he was struck by a taxi cab in Iqaluit while lying in the middle of the road.

The 20-year-old man, originally from Clyde River, was struck by the vehicle before 6:00 a.m. Jan. 1 along a stretch of Queen Elizabeth Road between Northmart and Northwestel’s office building, the RCMP said Jan. 4.

Police said a preliminary investigation has found the young man had been lying in the middle of the road at the time he was struck.

The release did not indicate what the man’s condition was when he was hit.

No foul play is suspected in the man’s death, police said, but an investigation is continuing with the help of the Office of the Chief Coroner.

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends at this difficult time,” the RCMP said in the Jan. 4 release.
